My Dutchman's Pipe

Hi Everyone!
I 've been outside cleaning the garden when I spotted My Dutchman's Pipevine blooming. I went directly for the camera. This a fascinating plant.  Enjoy!!!!
Dutchman's Pipevine
Native Pipe Vine
Botanical Name: Aristolochia fimbriata

...for hosting iridescent blue and black pipevine swallowtail butterflies.

Flowers: One-inch exotic blooms of yellow and maroon resemble a trumpet shaped clay pipe; hence the common name. Blooms appear on new growths throughout the summer.

Foliage: The three-inch heart shaped green leaves are widely spaced along wiry stems and are marked with silver veins.

Snippets: This is the only plant where the pipe vine swallowtail butterfly will lay its eggs.

Flower display before leaves, late January to April.

If a healthy crop of caterpillars devour the entire above-ground growth, more will return from the tuberous roots to host the next batch of eggs.

I have a wooden screen for the pipe vine to grow on.  It is beautiful in the summer with the beautiful heart-shaped leaves and the little pipes peeking out of the greenery.

  1. Good Evening Betty Sweetie...
Oh my gosh I have never seen anything quite like this. I love this Dutchman's Pipe Vine. I would certainly love to have some seeds to give it a try here in Phoenix. It might be to hot, but I love this beautiful bloom. It is gorgeous.

I thank you for sharing. I am so tickled and happy that you shared such a beautiful treasure with me this evening.

Many hugs and much love, Sherry
